High Dust & Fluctuating Material Surface in Cement Raw Meal Silo: 80GHz Radar Level Meter Antenna Selection & False Echo Suppression Solution

Cement raw meal silos are core powder storage units in cement production. The operating conditions are harsh: dense dust clouds are generated during feeding, material impact causes violent fluctuations on the material surface, and internal obstacles such as support beams, ladders and discharge pipes widely exist. Traditional level instruments often suffer from jumping readings, signal loss and measurement drift. Raw meal features low dielectric constant. Dust attenuates radar echoes, and powder buildup on antenna further weakens signals, which negatively impacts batching stability and silo inventory management. Targeting the measurement pain points of cement raw meal silos, Huachuang Measurement & Control provides HCDAR series 80GHz FMCW narrow-beam radar level meters, delivering a reliable level measurement solution covering antenna hardware selection, on-site installation guidelines and intelligent algorithms.

Antenna selection is the primary guarantee for powder silo measurement. PTFE lens antenna is recommended for raw meal which easily adheres to surfaces. The smooth lens prevents powder accumulation, performing better than horn antennas in heavy dust environments. An optional air purge port can be equipped, using compressed air to regularly clean the antenna surface and avoid signal blockage by powder scaling. The 80GHz radar features a narrow beam angle of around 3°, highly concentrated microwave energy. The beam can bypass silo walls and internal supports to greatly reduce false echoes reflected by obstacles. The measuring range should be selected according to silo height, normally 15~70m for raw meal silos, with 20% extra margin to prevent signal saturation during rapid material rising.

Installation position determines long-term stability. The radar probe must avoid the material falling zone, where falling material brings strong clutter and continuous scouring on antenna. Mounting flanges should keep a safe distance from silo walls and stiffeners to prevent beam hitting internal structures. Overlong nozzles are forbidden, as they generate standing waves and extra interference. After installation, false echo learning should be activated. The instrument records echo curves of all fixed obstacles under empty silo status, identifies and shields interference signals from brackets, nozzles and ladders.

Huachuang HCDAR radar integrates self-developed FMCW signal processing algorithms to dynamically distinguish real material echoes from clutter. The algorithm analyzes echo amplitude and phase features, separating true material surface peaks from fixed false echoes. Weak echo enhancement will be automatically enabled during dusting to filter random dust clutter. Stable readings can be maintained even with uneven material surfaces. The instrument supports HART and RS485 communication. Data can be transmitted to DCS for real-time monitoring and high/low level alarm, preventing blockage and overflow risks.

The instrument holds dust explosion-proof certificates for cement hazardous areas. With Huachuang Cloud IoT platform, users can remotely check device status and echo curves. Frequent manual climbing for maintenance is reduced to improve site safety. Compared with plumb-bob level meters which easily get stuck and ultrasonic sensors with severe signal attenuation in dense dust, the non-contact 80GHz radar has no mechanical wear and low maintenance, suitable for long-term continuous operation in raw meal silos.
